TinyLJ 0.9.3 for Java 2 Micro Edition

A moblogging tool for J2ME-enabled mobile devices

With this application, you may write blog entries and post them to LiveJournal right from your cell phone or PDA.

Based on MobileLJ client written by Brian Enigma.
Rewritten by Levon Gevorkyan.
Released under terms of GPL.

Features

  • Lightweight, easy to use interface.
  • Draft gets saved automatically when you exit application, and gets cleared after sending to the LJ server.
  • Password is stored and sent over network in encrypted form.
  • Postings may be made public, private, or "friends only".
  • Automated check for a new versions of application.
  • A customizable signature to easily distinguish between the posts made from the phone and from the PC in your journal.
  • Support for national languages (if supported by phone).
  • Easy use of LJ-specific tags ("lj user"), hyperlinks, and text emphasis (bold, italic) in editor.

Installation and usage

In your device's WAP browser, go to URL http://levong.ok.ru/TinyLJ.jad. When the download starts, you may be asked permission to install the application. Answer Yes.

If this does not work (there are number of reasons why OTA downloads may fail), here is another way:

Download these two midlet's files: JAD , JAR onto your computer.
Install them to the phone using appropriate method (for Nokia phones there is Nokia Application Installer).

After installation, open TinyLJ application, go to Settings and fill out your LiveJournal username and password.
Then, you may enter your journal entry and post it to LiveJournal by choosing Edit Entry/Post! from the main application menu (provided that you have GPRS, CSD or some other kind of network connection).

Supported devices

Theoretically, it should work on any MIDP 1.0 compliant device (any phone/PDA which is "Java capable"). However, some phone models have buggy and/or non-standard J2ME implementations, so TinyLJ may or may not work for you. It depends of your phone's manufacturer, phone model and even firmware version.

Here is the list of successfully tested devices:

  • Nokia 6310i MIDP SDK 1.1 Emulator
  • Nokia 6310i/5.10+, 3510i, 3595, 3650, 6610, 6600, 7210, 7250
  • SonyEricsson t68i, T610, SE WTK Emulator
  • Siemens S55, C55, M50, MT50, M55

If TinyLJ works ok on your device, which is not listed here - please let me know.

* Fixed annoying "wrong posting date" bug.
+ Added shortcuts for inserting "bold" and "italic" html tags to subject/entry editor menu.

2003/02/10 Version 0.1.5

Changes since 0.1.0:
+ Added 'Cyrillic support' checkbox to preferences menu. This enables support for Unicode Cyrillic character set for devices which do not support Unicode natively. In most cases, there is no need to set this option manually, because the program recognizes Unicode presence automatically, but may be useful for testing.
* Fixed bug with missing LJ client protocol version which resulted in messed up national characters showing in entry's content and subject.
* Finally tested on Nokia 6310i phone. Should be working fine now.

2003/01/31 Version 0.1.0

Changes since 0.0.9:
* The user interface was redesigned once again (no separate posting form, all actions moved to the main menu).
+ Added initial support for Cyrillic characters for the devices which do not support Unicode (not tested!).
+ Added commands "Insert LJ User" and "Insert URL" to the subject/entry editor menu.
+ Added special signature to mark postings written on mobile phone.

2003/01/24 Download problems fixed

2003/01/21 Version 0.0.9

Changes since initial Brian's version:
+ Improved posting method to eliminate the need of an intermediate custom proxy server; client sends post directly to the LiveJournal server.
+ Unicode support.
* User interface was redesigned.
+ Added 'Current Mood' post option.
+ Added 'Post visibility' option.
* Fixed bug with RecordStore which prevented the login preferences to be stored in device's (Nokia 6310i) persistent storage.
